This category covers a very broad range of development types including Nursing / Care Homes to Surgeries and to Treatment Centres.
The brief for Surgeries and Treatment Centres is clear in that it primarily focuses on specialist operational requirements and standards. Thereafter it is a question of integrating the client’s specific working preferences with those stipulated requirements.
In Residential and Nursing Homes the design and operational requirements are largely set by the Authorities since they will be required to license the operation of the facility. That said, such standards have changed and evolved considerably over the many years we have been designing. Developments have gone from the alteration and extension of large existing properties – often with shared bedrooms / mini wards to now being bespoke new build. The current bespoke developments being exclusively single occupancy bedrooms, each with their own ensuite. We now invariably design those developments as a combination of “small family type wings” where the opportunity exists to group residents more closely, to shared care requirements e.g. dementia, or elderly infirm or younger disabled.
The design of such developments also taking into consideration the need to design the building in such a way that gives the most efficient distribution of nursing and other care staff since an ill considered building arrangement would result in the need for additional staff which in turn increases operational costs and therefore affects long term viability. The design of Nursing / Care Homes is primarily about the residents, the staff and the operator but it is also about the friends and families of those residents. Families and friends want a Home which in all its parts reassures them that their friend or relative is living in something they would wish for themselves.
